A data-centric sports marketing company forecasts that global sports sponsorship will fall by 37 percent this year, a total decline of $ 17 billion from 2019.
According to news from the insidethegames.biz portal, Two Circles predicts that after last year’s 46.1 billion, support will be just 28.9 billion this year. The relapse is a consequence of the coronavirus epidemic.
Financial service providers, according to the company, will spend 45 percent less, just 6.9 billion, on this area after this sector was the most active in 2019 with 12.6 billion, or more than a quarter of all sponsorships.
The automotive industry is also expected to take back support significantly, with a forecast of 2.7 billion this year after 5.9 billion, a 55 percent reduction.
“Due to the pandemic, several new sponsorship agreements have been frozen and previous contracts will be terminated because sponsors will also have to look for cost-effective solutions or close down,” writes Two Circles.
The company released its report a few days after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) acknowledged that some of its sponsors could only pay out agreed amounts later than originally expected after the pandemic had to postpone the summer games in Tokyo to next year.
