Luca Udvardy, ranked seventh, lost in the junior final at the Wimbledon tennis championship.
The only Hungarian in the age group tournament - who reached the second round at Roland Garros in May - is only listed in the junior world rankings, where he is in 19th place. The 16-year-old player could have been the first Hungarian to win the junior women's singles in London, while Márton Fucsovics won the men's singles in 2010. Udvardy - whose older sister Panna reached the second round at Church Road last week - lost three sets in total to reach the final.
The first-ranked Liv Hovde, who is facing her in the final, is fourth in the junior ranking and 1000th in the adult ranking. The favorite of the first meeting between the two was clearly the 16-year-old American, who only lost one set on the way to the final. At the same time, the Texas teenager "was shaking" in the third round, when he got past his Canadian rival only by parrying a match point.
With the final, it was also decided for Udvardy that he will not be able to participate in next week's WTA tournament in Budapest, because although he received a free card for the qualifier, it will be held this weekend, and he will not be able to come home for the qualification due to the final game in London.
The first set of the final, held on the centenary center court, brought five breaks, Udvardy took Hovde's serve after 2:4, but he could not bring his own, and after 31 minutes he was a set behind. The continuation brought a similarly intense and varied struggle, but the uncertain serving booms continued to follow one another. The American broke the series of five breaks at the worst time, as he pulled away to 5:3 with a successful service. At that time, the Hungarian still brought a game, but he could no longer prevent Hovde's triumph. The meeting lasted 1 hour and 12 minutes.
So far, three Hungarians have been able to win the women's junior tournament of a Grand Slam tournament: Anikó Kapros in Melbourne in 2000, Ágnes Szávay in Paris in 2005, and Dalma Gálfi in 2015 in New York.
Result, final:
Liv Hovde (American, 1st)-Luca Udvardy (7th) 6:3, 6:4
