It is not yet known exactly when the Vuelta will hold the Espana road bike race this year, but contrary to the original plans, it will certainly not start in the Netherlands and shorten the Spanish Grand Tour from 21 to 18 stages.
Organizers said Wednesday the coronavirus epidemic has forced them and the Dutch to cancel the start in Utrecht. The parties have agreed that the Spanish battle will start in the Netherlands in 2022.
The Vuelta would have originally taken place between 14 August and 6 September, with the first three stages being held in the Netherlands. At present, all that is certain is that the last three-week race of the year will take place after the World Cup, which ends on September 27, according to previous media reports, from November 1. The International Federation of Sports (UCI) is expected to publish a redesigned race calendar next week.
On the other hand, it has been decided that the three stages in the Netherlands will not be replaced, Vuelta, shortened to 18 stages, will start in the Basque Country: the first stage will start from Irún and end on the rise of Arrate near Eibar. The decision has already been notified to the UCI by the organizers.
