Tour de France - The world champion and John Degenkolb will not continue due to injury

Due to injury, the 107th Tour de France cycling race was forced to give up after the first stage by two excellences of Lotto-Soudal, Belgian world champion Philippe Gilbert and German John Degenkolb.

On Saturday, in the first stage, the rainy weather and the resulting slippery roads made things difficult for the riders, with several falls. The two cyclists also fell victim to this.

Their team reported on their website that 38-year-old 2012 World Cup gold medalist Gilbert had a broken knee. In connection with the 31-year-old Degenkolb, he was highlighted: after his fall, he covered 65 kilometers to the finish alone, but since he reached the finish line two minutes outside the level time, the organizers no longer credited him for the stage. The latter resented, saying they did not respect the injured wheeler’s efforts, even though it was already obvious to everyone that Degenkol had to give up this year’s Tour.

The French circuit will be held at an unusual time instead of mid-summer due to the coronavirus epidemic, but still this year’s first three-week race, as the also postponed Giro d’Italia, usually in May, will only take place in October, followed in part by an overlap with the Vuelta. Espana. Participants will cover a total of 3,470 kilometers until they reach their destination on the Champs-Élysées in Paris on 20 September.
