Tokyo 2020 - He resigns as chairman of the organizing committee

Mori Josiro announced on Friday that he would resign from chairing the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee. The 83-year-old leader, who was also the country’s prime minister before, was forced to leave because of his remark on women.

Mori said last week she would be annoyed if the female members talk too much at the evaluations and because of that, discussions could drag on. He later called his statement reckless and apologized. At the same time, she stressed that she did not intend to offend women, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) then indicated that she considered the case closed.

However, this is not the end of the story, because an action was launched on social media with a “Mori, please give up” call, which more and more people joined.

Mori insisted that he would continue to take responsibility for organizing and conducting the Olympics, but if the voices demanding his resignation continue to grow, he will have no choice but to leave.

The flood of criticism did not subside, with athletes, sponsors, volunteers, diplomats and journalists, among others, expressing their displeasure, and one paper called the "village mentality" the process by which its environment, including the current head of government, Suga Josihide, wanted to protect Mori, thinking that an apology would be enough. According to independent political analyst Ito Acuo, it could have been enough if criticism had only come from Japan.

"But the reaction was global," he added.

“The important thing is that the Olympics will be held in July, so I can’t take part in the preparations any longer,” Mori, who has been leading the organizing committee since 2014, said at a board meeting of the board. “If I have a problem staying in the post, it puts all our efforts in the trash,” he continued.

At the same time, he reiterated that he did not want to offend women, his statement was a "question of interpretation" and at the same time blamed the media for saying that it had heated public anger.

Olympic Minister Hasimoto Szeiko is currently the most likely to take Mori's place, as he is absolutely in the spotlight in terms of preparations. The nominating committee was first chaired by Kavabuchi Saburo, former president of the Japan Football Association, adviser to the preparatory body - Mori himself asked him to take his place - but the 84-year-old sports manager did not take up the job in the end, although it was still open on Thursday. he showed up for this.

In a statement, Thomas Bach, chairman of the IOC, responded to the resignation by saying that the five-ring body "fully respects" Mori's decision. The German sports leader added that his successor will also work hand in hand with the IOC in order to host a safe 2020 Olympics in 2021. At the same time, he emphasized that the cooperation with the current head of the organizing committee was outstanding.

The Olympics would have originally taken place between July 24 and August 9, 2020, and the Paralympics would have started on August 25, but both were postponed in March last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The five-ring games are currently scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8 this year, and the Paralympics will take place from August 24 to September 5.
