Nadal withdrew, the injury prevailed, Kyrgios is playing a GS final for the first time in his life

22-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal withdrew from the Wimbledon tennis championship due to an abdominal wall injury.

The 36-year-old Spanish star announced at a press conference on Thursday evening that he will not play in the semi-finals.

He said: in his current state, he would not be able to win two matches, if only because he is not able to serve at the right speed, and moreover, he does not want to risk missing two or three months.

On Wednesday, Nadal crushed the American Taylor Fritz in a five-set battle lasting 4 hours and 20 minutes, but he had to be nursed several times in the process. He was given anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medication, while his father and sister from the box were gesticulating violently, encouraging him to give up the match.

On Thursday, he underwent a medical examination, during which it was determined that there is a 7 mm tear in the abdominal wall. Despite this, he still trained, but was eventually forced to step back. Nadal will miss three to four weeks, but he hopes that this will not affect his competition program.

The Spanish classic, who won the first two GS tournaments of the year, won at Roland Garros in June by continuously receiving anesthetic injections into the nerves of his left leg due to Müller-Weiss syndrome, a rare deformity of the metatarsal bone. He then underwent a special radio frequency therapy in Barcelona, which prevents the paralyzed leg nerves from transmitting pain signals to the brain.

The 2008 and 2010 champion of the English tournament would have clashed with Nick Kyrgios for the Wimbledon final on Friday. The latter player is thus the first Australian to play in the men's final at the English Open since Mark Philippoussis in 2003. This will be Kyrgios' first Grand Slam final.
