Murray says young people are far from the "big threesome"

Andy Murray was not surprised that Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open tennis tournament, which ended on Sunday, as he thinks the youngsters are still far from the "big three".

The two-time Olympic champion Scottish player was reminded of this: Russia’s Danyiil Medvedev made it to the finals against Serbia with a series of twenty matches, but overall he lost smoothly in three games.

“I was expecting a tighter final, but I know exactly how good Novak is at catching the yarn and motivated enough,” said Murray, who lost five finals in Melbourne, four of them against the current world leader.

“It’s completely different to serve and bet in a Grand Slam final against a 17-time champion than in a quarter or semi-final,” added the British, who had previously contracted the coronavirus and was unable to travel to Australia for the first major tournament of the year.

Djokovic’s 18th GS success meant that 15 of the last 16 flagship tournaments were won by a member of the “big triple,” namely Djokovic, Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer.

“The youngsters couldn’t really show that they were particularly close to them,” said 33-year-old three-time GS champion Murray.
