Russia’s Danyiil Medvedev won the ATP World Championships for men’s tennis players in London after beating Austria’s Dominic Thiem in reverse in a set disadvantage in Sunday’s final.
The third-ranked Viennese player - who was also a finalist last year - took his fourth-ranked Russian serve at 2: 2 in the opening set, then took his advantage and brought the game in 47 minutes.
In the sequel, Medvedev - who bid farewell to the World Cup with three defeats last year - kept his serve at 2: 2 in a 13-ball boom boom. There were more breakballs on both sides, but the set was shortened, in which the 24-year-old Moscow tennis player equalized with seven points in a row from 0-2.
Also in the last act, the key boom came at 2: 2, when Medvedev managed to take away the serving of the US Open champion for the first time during the match at his eighth break ball. From now on, he no longer let go of the match, which lasted 2 hours and 41 minutes.
The Russian tennis player won the first World Cup title of his career unbeaten and received $ 1.5 million (HUF 454 million) in addition to the trophy.
The jubilee, fiftieth ATP World Championships were held behind closed doors due to the coronavirus epidemic, and total prize money fell from $ 9 last year to $ 5.7 million in London, the last venue for the season-closing battle. The World Cup will be hosted by Turin from 2021 to 2025.
