The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Sunday that a final decision will be made within the next four weeks on the Tokyo Summer Games, which were threatened by the coronavirus epidemic, with three scenarios, according to the German news agency dpa.
IOC President Thomas Bach said on Sunday that the cancellation of the Olympics is not on the agenda, but the organization will also consider postponing the Games over the next four weeks. The latter would be a historic decision, there has never been an example of this before in the history of five-ring events. The Olympics were canceled five times: during the First World War, the Berlin Games of 1916 were missed, then during the Second World War, the Tokyo Games of 1940 and London in 1944, and the Cortina d'Ampezzo in 1940 and 1944 in London. Sapporo Winter Olympics were not held.
According to the German news agency dpa, if the IOC decides to postpone it, it can choose from three scenarios.
One is that the Olympics will be held this fall, which is the best option due to the weather conditions, as there have been several critical remarks in the past about the heat in Tokyo in the summer. At the same time, it is questionable how much of the intensity the coronavirus epidemic will lose a few months after the originally planned date of the Olympics, July 24-August 9. It could also be a concern that U.S. capital-intensive television companies would presumably be reluctant to agree to a fall showdown when U.S. leagues, such as basketball, hockey, and American football, are battling.
In the other scenario, like the European Football Championship, the Olympics will be postponed by exactly one year. The great advantage of this version is that both the IOC and the organizing committee have enough time, but it is necessary to stop the spread of the virus completely by then. If this scenario materializes, however, the international competition calendars will have to be significantly modified, as the World Water Championships will also be held next summer in Japan, Fukuoka, and the World Championships in Athletics in Eugene, USA. The International Athletics Federation has already indicated that it is ready to postpone the World Cup until 2022.
In principle, this year's Olympics may also be postponed to 2022. In this case, there would be even more time to organize the games after all aspects, including international competition calendars, have subsided. However, it would probably be difficult for the IOC to manage to have both the Summer and Winter Olympics in the same year, as the 2022 Winter Games will be held in Beijing. The situation is further complicated by the fact that a World Cup will be held in Qatar at the end of that year.
As previously reported, on Monday, Canada and then shortly after Australia indicated that they would not participate in the Summer Olympics at all this year - while Japanese Prime Minister Abe Sinzo first mentioned the possibility of a postponement - and several sports organizations in the last 48 hours (see even here and here) and an athlete protested against this year’s staging.
