Márton Fucsovics defeated three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland in the second round of the Australian Open tennis tournament by blocking three match balls.
The leader of the Hungarian Davis Cup national team - who bid farewell to Marc Polmans of Australia in the opening round - has previously told MTI that he is very much looking forward to the fifth battle of the two of them.
"It's going to be a good match! Now the dice will turn and he'll have more to lose. I'm not afraid of the match, I prefer to play with featured players because they're better off being burdened by the burden of chance," he explained before the meeting.
Of the previous four clashes, 55th in the ATP rankings, Fucovics was able to win one, in 2018 in Geneva, when he finally earned the only tournament victory of his career so far.
The Hungarian player started the fifth match in the 10,500-seat John Cain Arena better and pulled in 3: 1. The 35-year-old Olympic champion - who was 18th in the world rankings but was also third - caught up with him at 4: 4, but after 5: 5 he failed his serve again, which was already in his opening set.
In the sequel, the Nyíregyháza tennis player - who was stopped last year by superstar Roger Federer in the eighth final of Melbourne - led to 4-0 with brave blows and took a double game advantage in just 33 minutes.
However, the 2014 champion of the Australian Open didn’t give up, he broke right at the start of the third act and then beautified, keeping the difference. The fourth set, like the second, was smoother again, the Swiss pulled to 4: 0 and then 5: 1, and equalized after a tight three hours.
The final game could come, in which Fucsovics took his rival's serve at 4: 3, but he could not outsource the match. Wawrinka "resurrected" again and saved the set for shortening, which, being the fifth game, lasted for ten points instead of seven. In the tie-break, the opponent stepped 6-1 with his trademark back straight, then after 9-6 he was unable to take advantage of three match balls. The hair clearly belonged to Fucsovics, who reversed the position and after 3 hours 59 minutes he spread happily on the field.
“It was my 29th birthday two days ago, but now I feel like ninety, I’m really tired,” he began his assessment with a smile. "I got incredible encouragement from the Hungarians here, and I was also mentally and physically strong. I have a lot in the gym, I have a great team and a fitness coach, we train a lot, the result is success. As for Stant, I knew he would come back in the third set, he’s a very tough opponent and of course a three-time Grand Slam champion. ”
Fuchovich eventually revealed that his favorite GS race in Melbourne:
“I also made an eighth final twice, and now I still enjoy the moment and the sunshine, because there are closures at home and it’s snowing,” he said.
Not long after, it turned out that in the third round, Canadian Milos Raonic was waiting for the Hungarian lead, who was 14th in the world rankings, but also third after his 2016 Wimbledon final. The 30-year-old organ king has won both of their previous meetings, which were fought on grass in Stuttgart in 2018 and 2019.
Fucsovics is expected to start performing in pairs on Thursday with Attila Balázs.
