Because of his elbow injury, Nisikori Kej will not play in the first Grand Slam Tournament of the Year in 2020.
"My team decided that since I'm not 100% healthy, I'm not quite ready to play at the highest level," said the Japanese tennis player, who added that it was not an easy decision because the Australian Open is one of his favorite tournaments.
The player ranked 13th in the world rankings most recently entered the US Open at the end of August, finishing in the third round. He later underwent minor elbow surgery.
Nisikori was previously fourth in the world rankings and reached the quarterfinals four times at the Melbourne Tournament.
Apart from him, Andy Murray of the UK, who announced his absence on Sunday, will not be playing at the Australian Open. The former world leader would have been back in the individual Grand Slam after a year.
