American Fred Kerley triumphed in the men's 100 meters on Saturday's day of competition at the World Outdoor Athletics Championships in Eugene. Two of his compatriots finished on the podium in the classic track, the last time a similar example happened in 1991.
Kerley, the silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, finished with a time of 9.86 seconds, followed by Marvin Bracy and Trayvon Bromell, who completed the distance in 9.88 seconds. Between them, the target photo decided the silver and bronze medals. The fourth American sprinter in the final, Christian Coleman, was sixth as the defending champion.
"It's a special thing to win on home ground, in front of a home crowd. And our triple success is a wonderful blessing. I believe that we can dominate next year's World Cup again," Kerley referred to the World Cup in Budapest.
Jamaican Oblique Sevilla (9.97 seconds), the fastest in the semifinals, finished fourth, while last year's Olympic winner, Italian Lamont Jacobs, could not be there in the finals after withdrawing due to injury before the semifinals.
Led by Carl Lewis, in 1983 and 1991, three American sprinters finished on the men's 100 m podium, which has not been achieved by athletes from other nations since then.
To the disappointment of the organizers, the 12,500-seat stadium was not full even in the most interesting men's 100-meter final, despite the expected domestic success there.
In the men's long jump, China's Wang Jiannan timed his best for the season well, his last attempt of 8.36 meters won the gold medal.
In the women's shot put, the American Chase Ealey opened with 20.49 meters, a result that later meant victory. China's Kung Li-xiao, gold medalist at the Tokyo Olympics and the previous two World Cups, had to make do with the silver medal this time. With his fifth attempt - which was the best of the season for him - Kung approached his American opponent by 10 centimeters, but failed to overtake him. The Dutch Jessica Schilder won the bronze medal with a national record.
