The Polish national football team will not stand in the World Cup qualifiers against the Russians, the president of the Polish Football Association announced on Saturday.
"No more words, it's time for action," said Cezary Kulesza, who revealed that representatives of the Swedish and Czech federations involved in the other branch of the World Cup race are also in talks.
"In light of the escalation of Russian aggression against Ukraine, the Polish national team will not play its match against the Russian national team," Kulesza wrote on Twitter.
"This is the only right decision. We are negotiating with the Swedish and Czech federations to communicate a common position to the international federation," he added.
The team captain of the Polish national team, Robert Lewandowski, also welcomed the development in the social media.
"This is the right decision. I can not imagine a match against the Russian national team in this situation, while the armed conflict continues in Ukraine," - explained Lewandowski. - "Russian footballers and printers are not responsible for this, but we cannot pretend that nothing has happened."
On Tuesday, the Polish federation asked for the consent of the European Union (UEFA) to take a neutral stance against the Russians. According to the original plans, the Russian-Polish meeting would be held in Moscow on March 24 as part of the European qualifier. The winner of the clash would play five days later with the other pair in the B-branch, the winner of the Swedish-Czech clash, to take part in the World Cup in Qatar from 21 November to 18 December.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a military operation in the Donetsk Basin on Thursday morning, noting that Russia has no plans to occupy Ukraine, but will seek to demilitarize the country.
