Before the presidential election in Barcelona, mud throwing begins

There will be a presidential election at Barcelona next year. As we have become accustomed to, the candidates are sharply critical of each other, and the whole procedure ends in tossing several times. This time it is no different, according to one of the candidates, the club is morally declining and is also in a state of near bankruptcy.

Victor Font - who had already announced that he would run in next year’s presidential election in 2018 - recalled in an open letter to club members and the media that he had repeatedly warned that the association was heading for a turbulent period.

He explained the need to replace the best generation in football history, build and fund the Espai Barca development project, while competing with opponents with almost unlimited financial resources.

The Espai Barca project, unveiled in 2014, touches on many things, including the already completed Johan Cruyff Stadium at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, but its main element is the renovation of the Nou Camp Stadium, which was originally scheduled to begin in 2017. .

"If the risks were great so far, they have now become huge. We are in the middle of a pandemic that has virtually stopped life and will affect all areas, including sports, to an unpredictable extent," wrote Font, who enjoys the team's previous the support of his excellent player, Xavi Hernández.

He stressed that members of the board have been painting a shameful picture of the club for months, one serious scandal, accusations and complaints following another, it is no coincidence that six of the board members have abruptly resigned in recent days.

The presidential candidate has stated that the club is in great danger and a complete overhaul is needed to get him back on track on and off the field. Victor Font explained that these are not new problems, as the Neymar affair has hurt the club’s judgment, as well as management’s public discussions with players and staff, and how to deal with them all on social media.

"This is accompanied by unpredictable sports policy, the dissolution of the board, and the significant drop in income caused by the epidemic. This results in the risk of economic bankruptcy and moral decline. We must start again from scratch," the presidential candidate outlined a dark vision.

He added that the management model that allowed FC Barcelona to become the best multisport club in the world is no longer working today, there is a lack of transparency.

Pound highlighted that Catalans have more revenue than any of their rivals, yet they spend all their money, so they are forced to sell or exchange players at the last minute of each transfer period to settle their debts.

In the letter, he called on the current leadership to explain the current economic situation and debts, and demanded more transparency and asked for unnecessary spending, including the Espai Barca project, to be suspended for the duration of the coronavirus epidemic.

"There is a need for transformation in the offices as well. People as brave, creative, innovative and successful as the game Johan Cruyff introduced on the field," he wrote.

According to Pound, this transformation also requires the club’s former excellent athletes.
